The Believer’s Authority

Ephesians 1:15-23 “This is why, since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 I never stop giving thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the mighty working of his strength. 20 He exercised this power in Christ by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens— 21 far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him as head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.”

People often want to know how to pray for fellow Christians. If you start praying these Ephesian prayers for them, you’ll see results in their lives and yours.

Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

Jesus conquered the enemy.

Colossians 2:15 “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him.”

Jesus has the keys to death and hell.

Revelation 1:17-18 “When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last, 18 and the Living One. I was dead, but look—I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Satan was dethroned by Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary and in His resurrection. The devil has been removed from his throne, his place of prominence, his place of authority, and from his high office. Jesus has already done this for every believer.

Satan no longer has authority over believers, unless they give him access or authority through lack of knowledge of God’s Word, disobedience, or failure to exercise their rights in Christ.

Satan has been dethroned and stripped of his authority. This is the wisdom the Holy Spirit is trying to get across to the Body of Christ in the Spirit-inspired prayers in the Book of Ephesians.

Jesus’ victory over the devil is our victory too. The wisdom of God is that believers only need to stand in Jesus’ victory over the devil because they are in Christ. That’s why believers don’t need to make war on an enemy that is already defeated. They simply must enforce the victory already won for them. Our combat with the devil always should be with the awareness that we have authority over him because he is a defeated foe—the Lord Jesus Christ defeated him for us.

The enemy only has one tool to use against the believer. Lies.

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.”

All Spiritual Blessings

Ephesians 1:3 reads, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us [the whole Church] with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

• Authority belongs to us whether we realize it or not. But just knowing this isn’t enough. It’s knowledge acted upon that brings results!

What is Authority?

Definition: The power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.

• Authority is about submission to and distribution of the will of God.

• His will is… to be known and manifested.

• He has given me His spirit that I might know the will of God.

Luke 10:19 “I have given you AUTHORITY to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the POWER of the enemy….”

Authority =Exussia: the power to act and Power = Dunamis: explosive power

• In speaking about “serpents and scorpions,” Jesus is talking about the power of the devil—demons, evil spirits, and all his minions. We need to realize that we’ve got authority over all of them!

• The value of our authority rests on the power that is behind that authority. God Himself is the power behind our authority!

• The devil and his loveless forces are obligated to recognize our authority! The believer who thoroughly understands that the power of God is backing him can exercise his authority and face the enemy fearlessly.

Q. What is Authority?
A. Delegated Power

Paul told believers to “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.” (Eph. 6:10).

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Jesus is seated far above…

Ephesians 1:20 “…which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.”

We are seated with Jesus too.

Ephesians 2:1-6 “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

Where? Far above…

You never will understand the authority of the believer only with your intellect; you must get the spiritual revelation of it. You must believe it by faith.

The Church is not to pray to God the Father about the devil; the Church is to exercise the authority that belongs to it.

The Church is Responsible for dealing with the demonic.

Luke 7:6-10 “Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.

Jesus has all Authority

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Matthew 28:18

In My Name…

Mark 16:15-18 “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, therefore to God, Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

• From Who? You!

• They are not afraid of you, but of Jesus, whom you represent.

Authority flows through submission. If you are not submitted to authority then you don’t have it available to operate in.

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Ephesians 4:27 “nor give place to the devil.”

This means you are not to give the devil any place in you. He cannot take any place unless you give him permission to do so. And you would have to have authority over him or this wouldn’t be true.”

Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give unto you Authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the POWER of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Jesus gave us His authority.

Matthew 18:18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Say this out loud, “Satan, in the Name of Jesus Christ, I break your power over my life, and I claim deliverance and salvation!”

John 14:13-13 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.”

You must allow the Holy Spirit to lead you when dealing with spiritual warfare.

We must use discernment and cooperate with the Holy Spirit. Follow His lead. Don’t get ahead of Him. He knows what to do. Be willing and obedient and you will see God use you to lead people to His deliverance.

Here is a  copy of my sermon notes for last Sunday’s teaching on “The Believer’s Authority. Some of this material is found in a book by Kenneth E. Hagin called The Believer’s Authority and also a book by John Macmillan by the title, “The Authority of the Believer.” These two books serve as textbooks for minister’s around the world on the subject of Godly authority.

  2. This is great! Thank you. Listening to the sermon, I knew these texts were just what i needed.

Life has been such a roller coaster so far this year. I get buoyed up and things are going well, then the devil tosses a new sickness my way and I get overwhelmed and crumble. lol. When I’m not sick, it seems like I’m afraid I will get sick. I’m so human! Grrrr.

I know these texts will really help me so I just now came online planning to listen to the video and type out notes, but I see you have already done that job for me! Yay! I’m going to use the texts to create wall art I can read several times a day to remind me of the Power and Royal Authority I have through Christ.
